General dentistry

General dentistry is about maintaining lifelong oral health through the proper diagnosis and treatment of tooth decay and gum disease.

At your initial consultation, a thorough examination of your teeth and gums are carried out in order to diagnose for the presence of decay and gum disease. If decay is diagnosed, the most appropriate treatment options are discussed with you.

General dentistry includes:

  • Fillings
  • Root canal therapy
  • Cleaning and gum health
  • Wisdom teeth extraction
  • Sedation dentistry

Resin composite is a tooth coloured material used to fill teeth after decay has been removed from them.

Resin composite contains no mercury and is strong and durable enough to last 5-7 years depending on the case. It is however not ideal when the size of the filling is quite large. In such cases, ceramic is the preferred choice of material

Fillings require maintenance throughout life and at times need to be replaced. But regular checks and monitoring ensure that any maintenance is carried out in due time.

Before – Decay in teeth

After – Decay removed and teeth filled

Toothaches are often an indication that decay in a tooth has become quite advanced and in some cases, a filling is not sufficient to fix the problem. Root Canal Therapy or endodontic treatment is then required in order to salvage the tooth.

Root canal therapy

Root canal therapy (endodontic therapy) is a treatment designed to save teeth that have become infected by bacteria gaining access to the inner nerve chamber (the pulp). Severe pain and sometimes swelling are often accompanying symptoms. In such cases, the nerve of the tooth must be removed.

Previously, if a tooth became infected it would have simply been extracted. Today however, every possible step is taken to save all teeth and keep you with your natural teeth for life. Root Canal Treatment is one such option.

Severe toothaches that last for prolonged periods can be caused by infected teeth. Leaving the problem untreated can result in severe swelling and infection that can become life-threatening. In such cases, it is advised you see your dentist as soon as possible.

Gum Health

Gum disease is the most prevalent undiagnosed disease in Australia.

Without healthy gums, optimal oral health cannot be achieved. Gum disease damages the gums and bone around the teeth and limits their ability to protect teeth and anchor them in the jaws. This is the greatest cause of tooth loss in adults.

Gum disease is the result of plaque buildup. Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on teeth and it tends to accumulate in the small space between the gum and the teeth causing infection and inflammation. As a result, the gums can recede and possibly lead to tooth loss.

Symptoms of gum disease may include:

  • Bleeding gums whilst brushing or flossing your teeth
  • Pain while chewing
  • Red, sore, swollen gums
  • Bad breath or bad taste
  • Loss of teeth
  • Gums that have receded away from teeth and from in between teeth

Gum disease is a treatable condition. However, it also requires implementation of proper home care and regular follow ups to be kept under control.

Six-monthly checks and professional cleaning by your dentist are strongly recommended to keep gum disease at bay.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that usually erupt later in life from around 18 years of age.

Very often, there is not enough room in the back of the jaws for those teeth to erupt fully. They can also be abnormally angulated and not be able to erupt properly.

This can lead to impacted wisdom teeth causing inflammation of the soft tissues around them. Build up of plaque around them can lead to decay in the wisdom teeth and/or the teeth adjacent to them.

In such cases, extraction is recommended. Very often, extractions can be carried out under local anaesthesia with mild sedation, reducing the need for hospital stay and general anaesthesia.
